MICROWAVE DETECTION EXPLAINED

Microwave detection is a newer and more advanced occupancy sensor than the PIR– it works by emitting high-frequency electromagnetic waves and then receiving their echo.

The sensor detects the change in echo from the slightest movement in the detection zone which commands a microprocessor to switch the light on. Some benefits of using microwave sensors over PIR are:

  • Microwave sensors can be mounted inside most luminaires, therefore not compromising the IP (Ingress Protection) rating of the light unit.
  • 16m coverage field – more than adequate for most internal applications.
  • Fully adjustable in terms of light-linking, detection range and time-lag.

Typical applications for luminaires with built-in microwave detection:

  • Stairwells
  • Corridors
  • Carparks
  • Storerooms
  • External lighting
  • Office areas
  • Toilets
  • Classrooms
  • Warehouse areas

Our range of bulkhead luminaires has been designed to be simple to install and is available in many LED, emergency and dimmable options. We are able to incorporate switching or dimmable microwave detection within all of our range of luminaires providing optimum control of the luminaire, further enhancing the energy savings already available when using our LED range of luminaires.
